Character (Original Universe)
Name: Chiaki Nanami
Age: Never explicitly given in canon, but considering she's a recently created AI, no more than a few years. She has the general knowledge and personality of a teenager, though.
Gender: Female
Canon: Dangan Ronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
Canon Point: Post-game
History: Here
Personality:
At first glance, Chiaki seems like a fairly typical 'gamer' type - quiet, distractible, and somewhat anti-social. She has a tendency to doze off even in the middle of conversation, loses track of time when she becomes immersed in a game she's really interested in, and has a hard time talking to others in a way that isn't absolutely laden with game references. Often, it seems like the only times when she's actually lively are the times when she's in the middle of playing games. This is really just the outer shell of her personality, though. Her social awkwardness comes from the fact that she was programmed rather than born, and has never had any real friends outside of the simulation world created for the Neo World Program.

Because of this, despite being a high-class artificial intelligence, there is much that Chiaki does not know about the world. Hajime has to explain to her the meaning of Girls' Day, which is an otherwise widely-recognized Japanese holiday, as well as explain to her where milk comes from. Chiaki's view is rather simplistic - "milk is milk, right?" The concept of it having to come from somewhere is utterly foreign to her, as is the possibility that it might be produced by a living thing. Living in the Neo World Program with the other students is her first foray into learning by experiencing rather than relying on her preexisting knowledge as a program - even the things she knows about her 'father' and 'brother' are stated by Chiaki in the form of hearsay, so it's strongly implied that she's never met Chihiro or Alter Ego personally so much as has data on them.

Living things in general tend to confuse Chiaki and make her somewhat uncomfortable, by her own admission. She identifies dating sims as the only kind of game she's no good at, because she's bad at predicting what other people will do, or guessing at how they might think or feel about something. She vastly prefers the world of numbers, as they always follow the same set of rules no matter what. Hajime has to coach her through petting a cow because she's worried about not knowing how it will react to her, and even when she touches it, the feeling of physical warmth unnerves her a little. She does want to understand it, though, going so far as to trip into Hajime on purpose so she can feel what it's like to closely touch another person and feel their heartbeat.

On the opposite side of things, Chiaki tends to be the most comfortable when she's gaming, and the most talkative when the topic of conversation is gaming related. This doesn't really stop her from peppering obscure references throughout her speech even if the current topic has nothing to do with games, though. It's not an exaggeration to say that Chiaki views life itself as a game, but this doesn't mean that she doesn't take life seriously. Games are meant to be fun above all else, and it's important to have players, or games become pointless. Games also can't be fun if they're not fair, or if they break their own rules. For these reasons, Chiaki has a strong distaste for manipulative behavior, people who don't play by the rules, and above all else: killers. Death is the ultimate Game Over screen, after all.

Due to her analytical nature and the fact that no outcome is ever 100% certain, Chiaki's speech patterns can sometimes seem rather negative, even when she's trying to cheer someone up or compliment them. She often tacks on "...I think," "maybe," or "probably" to the end of her statements, which can make her seem like more of a pessimist than she is. In truth, she's one of the most optimistic and idealistic characters in the game, and is largely responsible at the end for helping Hajime escape from the prison of his own mind and decide to forge a new path for himself and the others, completely different from the two choices they've been given by Junko. She tells Hajime several times "don't lose" and "don't forget about me," showing that she does deeply value the connection they've made and cares about his continued livelihood and safety.

Despite all of her awkwardness, Chiaki does genuinely want to make friends and eventually warms up to everyone, but even that tends to be a slow process. When Chiaki first meets someone, she tends to punctuate most of her speech with awkward silences as she formulates her responses. Sometimes the delay is long enough that she falls asleep during it and has to start over. As seen with Hajime in particular, however, once she spends more time around someone she gets more talkative. And contrary to her seeming aloofness, Chiaki cares deeply about the lives and dreams of others, dedicating herself very strongly to helping the other students solve the mysteries of Jabberwock Island and pledging very early on to make sure that no one has to die in the process.

Mognet Sample:
Hello. I'm Chiaki Nanami. Back home, they called me the Ultimate Gamer. I love games of all kinds. This place feels a little like a game too, so I think I'll be able to get along well here. It reminds me of this series called Last Legend. It was one of the first RPGs to get really popular outside Japan, and it introduced a lot of elements that became staples of the genre later on. This place seems like it runs on the Job Class system, which was introduced in the third title in the series but not really perfected until the fifth. They got away from it in later installments, but they've started using them a lot again in the more recent MMO titles.

Anyway, I know a lot about this kind of stuff, so if anyone's having trouble getting the most out of their classes, you can come talk to me about it. Some class combinations work better than others, and while experimenting can be fun, it's usually better not to waste your early development on a class that you're just going to replace later. Some of them can be good even at low levels, though. For example, even if you haven't unlocked a lot of summons yet, Summoner is a great class to use with Black Mage or White Mage because of its high base MP. Being able to cast an extra spell or two before you run out is always good.

But that's enough for now. I should go now, probably. I think my moogle's hand is getting tired. I'm getting kind of tired too...
